Blue-tongued skinks are everything beardies are, with less drama. They're slower, calmer, omnivorous, and often more comfortable being handled. The perfect intermediate lizard, bigger than a gecko, but easier than an iguana.
Enclosure & Setup
4×2×1.5 ft minimum for an adult. Terrestrial, floor space matters most. Deep, loose substrate (cypress mulch, coco coir) for burrowing. One or two solid hides plus a soaking-sized water dish.
Heat, Lighting & Humidity
Basking: 95–100°F. Cool: 75–80°F. Strong T5 UVB across most of the enclosure. They'll spend a lot of time basking.
Diet & Feeding
Omnivore, 50% protein (cooked lean meat, insects, snails, eggs), 40% vegetables (squash, leafy greens, bell pepper), 10% fruit (berries, melon). Variety is critical. Feed adults 2–3 times per week.
Handling & Temperament
Some of the most handleable lizards in the hobby, once acclimated they often seek attention. Slow movements, support the body, give them time to walk onto your hand.
Blue-tongued skinks will eat anything you put in front of them. Their long-term health depends on you doing the portion control they can't.
Common Issues To Watch For
Obesity (they'll eat anything you offer, pace them). MBD from inadequate UVB or calcium. Mouth rot from poor husbandry. Otherwise extremely hardy.
