Boa constrictors are the next chapter for ball python keepers ready for something bigger. They demand more space, more food, and more careful handling, but reward keepers with decades of calm, predictable companionship.
Enclosure & Setup
Adults need 6×2×2 ft minimum, bigger is better. Front-opening PVC enclosures are standard. Stout climbing branches encourage activity. A water bowl large enough for the snake to soak its full body.
Heat, Lighting & Humidity
Warm side basking: 90°F. Cool side: 78–82°F. Humidity: 60–70%. Boas appreciate a slight day/night temperature drop. UVB is increasingly recommended for general wellbeing.
Diet & Feeding
Appropriately-sized rats every 10–14 days for adults. Juveniles eat more often. Power-feeding (more frequent meals) shortens lifespan dramatically, slow and steady wins.
Handling & Temperament
Calm with consistent handling but always support the body fully, boas are heavy and pushing against your hands is uncomfortable for them. Two-person rule for adults over 6 feet.
A power-fed boa will look impressive at three years old and dead at twelve. Pace the feeding schedule for the long game.
Common Issues To Watch For
IBD (Inclusion Body Disease) is the boa-specific concern, a devastating viral disease. Always quarantine new boas for at least 90 days away from any other snakes. Other issues: mites, scale rot from poor substrate hygiene.
