If anyone tells you to start with a ball python, ask them about cornsnakes first. Cornsnakes are everything ball pythons are praised for, minus the picky eating and finicky humidity, plus daytime activity and more colorful patterns.
Enclosure & Setup
A 40-gallon breeder or 36×18×12″ enclosure works for an adult. Cornsnakes are escape artists, make sure the lid latches. Plenty of hides and a couple of branches for climbing.
Heat, Lighting & Humidity
Warm side: 85°F. Cool side: 72–78°F. Humidity: 40–50%. Much more forgiving on temps and humidity than tropical snakes.
Diet & Feeding
Frozen-thawed mice every 5–10 days, sized to about the snake's widest body part. They're great eaters, usually no fuss.
Handling & Temperament
Some of the easiest snakes to handle. Wait a week after homecoming, then handle a few times a week for short sessions. Kingsnakes especially can be food-motivated, wash hands before handling so you don't smell like dinner.
Kingsnakes will absolutely eat each other. Never house two snakes together, full stop, no exceptions.
Common Issues To Watch For
Cornsnakes and kingsnakes can be cannibalistic, solitary housing only. Otherwise very hardy. Watch for stuck shed and the usual mites/respiratory infection signs.
